Step Deck Trailers:
Step deck trailers, also known as drop deck or lowboy trailers, are designed to carry taller loads by offering a lower deck height.
Design:
The trailer has two deck levels. The front section (over the hitch) is higher, and the main section behind it is significantly lower, creating a "step down." This design lowers the overall center of gravity for the cargo.
Length:
The main deck is typically 40 to 53 feet (12 - 16m) long. The upper deck (neck) is usually 10-12 feet long.
Load Capacity:
Similar to standard flats, ranging from 20 to 50 tons, depending on configuration.
Deck Height:
Upper Deck: ~ 5 ft (1.5m)
Lower Deck: ~ 3.5 ft (1.1m) - This critical drop allows for taller cargo.
Ideal For:
Tall but not excessively heavy equipment like farm machinery, industrial equipment, military vehicles, and large construction vehicles.
Extendable Flatbed Trailers:
These trailers are engineered with a variable-length deck to accommodate freight that is longer than standard trailer dimensions.
Design:
The deck is built in multiple sections that can be mechanically extended or retracted. The sliding tandem axles are also adjusted to maintain proper weight distribution and legal compliance when extended.
Length (Retracted):
Typically 42 to 48 feet (13 - 14.6m) to operate as a standard trailer.
Length (Extended):
Can be stretched to 80 feet (24.4m) or even longer for special configurations.
Load Capacity:
Generally ranges from 40 to 70 tons. Capacity must be carefully calculated when extended to maintain proper weight distribution across axles.
Deck Height:
Similar to a standard flatbed, around 4-5 feet (1.2 - 1.5m).
